The Indian insurance regulator IRDAI has allowed non-life insurers to offer “homecare/domiciliary treatment” or treatment at home as an add on cover afresh or to their existing policies.
In a circular to all non-life insurers including standalone health insurers, the Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority of India (IRDAI) has said companies have to file their products with it, if home treatment is offered as an add-on cover.
This concept was there earlier in the health policies but slowly it became a cover on demand. But the recent pressure on the health care services in providing hospital facilities for the treatment arising out of covid related ailments, and the restriction in the available domiciliary coverage under the various health policies has forced the insurance industry to rethink for restructuring the health insurance coverage.
It is a very welcome step taken by IRDA.
