The Engineering industry is one of the largest industrial sectors in India, including major manufacturing processes such as cutting, Welding, Grinding, Machining, foundry operations, Metal operations, and others.
Below are the occupancy bifurcations as per the manufacturing activities or processes for further premium optimisations.
- Engineering workshop – Structural steel fabricators, Sheet Metal fabrications
- Engineering Workshop – Steel Plant
- Engineering Workshop – Rolling mill.
- Engineering Workshop – Pipe Extruding, Stamping, Pressing, Forging Mills, Metal smelting, Foundries, Galvanising works.
- Engineering Workshop – Metal Extraction, Ore processing (other than Aluminium, Copper, Zinc), Plant processing Raw sand into Silica
- Engineering Workshop – Ferro Plants
- Engineering Workshop (Others) – Clock/Watch Manufacturing, Motor Vehicle Garages
- Engineering workshop – Manufacturing of Cut and Polished diamonds.
HAZARDS ASSOCIATED WITH THE ENGINEERING WORKSHOP:
Fire and related exposures are also considered in engineering industries due to temperature-oriented processes, molten metals operations, the involvement of Flammable gases for cutting/welding operations, and dust exposures due to metal fumes, etc.
FIRE & SAFETY MEASURES FOR ENGINEERING WORKSHOP:
- Segregation of the hazardous areas considering the hazardous process, flammable materials, metal operations, etc.
- Adequate ventilation arrangement in the factory premises.
- Suppression system (I.e., CO2 flooding system) arrangement in critical process machinery like grinding operations, etc.
- Adequate fire protection and Detection system arrangements, i.e., Fire hydrant system, Fire extinguishers, Emergency Alarms, Smoke or Beam detection system, etc., should be installed in the factory.
- Frequent routine maintenance and lubrication of all the moving parts should be carried out at regular intervals.
- Molten metal handling and foundries are the most critical exposures in the engineering workshops, so heat/flame detectors should be installed around the same machinery to detect fire at an early stage.
- Metal Dust and fumes in the air near the process machinery or metal operations are prone to dust hazard exposure, so adequate dust collection systems, industrial vacuum cleaners with explosion-proof motors, and regular housekeeping and cleaning are recommended for the same.
- Regular inspection and checking with a dedicated SOP should be made for all the critical equipment and electrical apparatus.
- Comprehensive fire and safety training and mock drills should be imparted in the factory for all employees and workers
