NO INSURANCE COMPENSATION TO HELMET LESS RIDER

As per the Road Transport Data in THE YEAR 2016, 480652 road accidents took place in India claiming 150785 Lives and serious injury to 494624 persons. Out of this about 30% of accidents involved two-wheelers. As per the survey by Exide Life Insurance more than 70% of Indian as a rider admitted to have ridden a bike without wearing helmet. The percentage for pillion rider is very high.

Karnataka High Court has ruled that motorist riding two wheelers without helmet will be ineligible for insurance compensation if they are involved in accident. Further it is required that the helmet must be certified by the ISI (Indian Standard Institute) as non ISI certified helmet may be of inferior quality. Exemption is given to few foreign- brand like helmet bearing stamps of Economic Commission for Europe or of US Department of Transport.

VARIOUS STATES ARE EXPECTED TO START ENFORCING THIS RULE.
